Compared with two-phase systems, relatively limited information is available on bubble size in three-phase flotation systems. To address this gap, Adnan Ceylan et al. (2024) investigated the relationship between bubble size and flotation performance using two different copper ore samples.<\/p>\n<p>In the first stage, surface tension and bubble size were measured in two-phase systems using methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) and polypropylene glycol methyl ether (PPGME). Bubble size was then measured in three-phase systems at both laboratory and industrial scales.<\/p>\n<p>The results indicated that surface tension decreased with increasing frother dosage and pH. Although a significant reduction in bubble size was observed with increasing frother dosage, no direct relationship was identified between surface tension and bubble size. However, pH affected frother behavior, resulting in smaller bubbles at pH 12 compared with pH 7.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the results obtained from three-phase system tests showed that increasing the frother dosage led to reductions in both bubble size and copper grade. Increasing the collector dosage also resulted in smaller bubbles and lower copper grade; however, frothers had a more pronounced effect on reducing bubble size.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with two-phase systems, bubbles in three-phase systems were considerably larger, which was attributed to the presence of collectors and solid particles.<\/p>\n<p>At the industrial scale, measurements conducted in cleaner circuits showed that smaller bubbles and higher copper grades were achieved compared with laboratory-scale tests.
